My house has been invaded by carpet beetles-how I’m not so sure, but as a museum collections specialist, this is my worst nightmare!
These little bugs may be tiny, but they can create huge areas of damage, and they’re extremely hard to get rid of. They eat textiles, furs, feathers, and numerous other little things, but its the carpets and textiles I’m most worried about! I’ve been on a vacuuming binge to get rid of the little suckers, which hopefully is working, so I thought it would be nice to post a vintage ad on vacuum cleaners. They were all the rage starting in 1899-1901, becoming streamlined and a part of every day material culture by 1919. Solely based on the woman’s clothing in the ad below places it between 1911 and 1919.
